This allowed two companies, Unicer - Bebidas de Portugal, S.A which produces Super Bock and Sociedade Central de Cervejas, S.A which produces Sagres, to own the entire Portuguese market with no real competition. The industry was nationalised after the 1974 Revolution and, in theory, the Portuguese beer market was open for business.

Sagres Beer is one of the most popular beers in Portugal and is produced and shipped to countries all around the world, and particularly wherever there is a large Portuguese community. The beer has won many international awards, including the World Beer Competition (in Belgium way back in 1958!) and one that caught my eye on their webpage.

What is Sagres? The original Sagres beer is a lager first released in 1940, and is designed for the warm weather of Portugal. Other drinks produced by Sagres include: Sagres Preta (a Munich-style dark beer) Sagres Radler (a collection of beers mixed with soft-drinks) Bohemia Cerveja (a collection of beers designed to accompany meals)

Super Bock and Sagres are the beer brands that the Portuguese consume the most, in the white, black and flavored beer categories. Here, the Super Bock/Sagres "dispute" is almost comparable to the eternal Coca-Cola/Pepsi. It's worth trying both. They are light beers, cheap and easy to drink.
